About Us

Discover the secluded haven of Witdam Farm, nestled amidst the untamed wilderness between Fraserburg and Sutherland. Perched on a plateau 1,500 meters above sea level, this remote sanctuary offers an unparalleled escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Prepare to disconnect from the grid, as Witdam Farm is devoid of Eskom electricity and cellular reception, allowing you to immerse yourself in uninterrupted tranquility. However, satellite WiFi is available during specific times of the day, ensuring you stay connected when necessary.

Embracing sustainable living, the farm relies on solar power for its 12V system. A backup generator, windmill, and solar pump provide essential support for the water supply, ensuring an abundant flow into the tanks. Your hosts, Stephan and Lola (an Australian sheepdog also known as a Kelpie), reside on the farm and will cater to your fundamental needs.

Witdam Farm is a testament to vast expanses, crisp unpolluted air, and a celestial canvas of starlit skies. Despite the remote location, you can indulge in comfortable accommodations and savor delectable Karoo-style cuisine. Surrounding the farm, a network of roads extends over 50 kilometers, ideal for cycling, running, or leisurely hikes where you won't encounter any traffic, only the occasional glimpse of sheep, cattle, springbuck, and other small wildlife. For the adventurous souls, the hilly terrain presents challenging 4x4 tracks, requiring experienced drivers and a minimum of two vehicles to tackle any unforeseen obstacles.

Beyond the immediate vicinity of the farm, extensive kilometers of captivating farm roads await exploration. Whether you choose to drive, cycle, or hike, the scenic landscape reveals historical treasures dating back to the 1700s when nomadic farmers and trekboers roamed these lands. Many corbelled shacks still stand as a testament to the past, while kilometers of stone "fences" remain steadfast today. Moreover, the veld holds remnants from the dinosaur era, fossils dating back 2.5 million years. It is quite likely that a few hidden gems still lie undiscovered amidst the untouched wilderness, waiting to be unearthed by modern explorers.

This hidden gem may be remote and its farm roads challenging, making it unsuitable for those seeking luxurious accommodations. However, for those who crave an authentic adventure, Witdam Farm is the ultimate destination. The skies, devoid of light and other pollutions, create an awe-inspiring spectacle for stargazers, captivating them for hours on end. With Sutherland, a world-renowned stargazing haven, merely 100 kilometers away, astronomical wonders are within reach.

The topography of the region reveals hidden gems nestled among the hills and valleys. Natural water springs dot the landscape, providing a continuous supply of pristine freshwater throughout the year. From atop the hills, breathtaking views stretch for kilometers in every direction, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the untouched surroundings.

The "modern" farmhouse at Witdam, dating back to the 1950s, offers three exceptionally spacious bedrooms. Although basic, the bathroom facilities have been updated for your comfort, while the beach wood floors exude a rustic charm. A farmhouse kitchen, complete with a wood-burning stove, invites culinary endeavors. Outside, an inviting fireplace and braai area beckon, surrounded by ample garden spaces where you can unwind beneath the shade of a tree or wander aimlessly, embracing the serenity of nature.

As a fully functional working farm, Witdam is home to sheep, cattle, springbuck, and Lucerne fields. The farm teems with diverse wildlife, including birds, tortoises, kudu, and occasional visits from leopards and hyenas.

While hunting is not permitted on the farm itself, arrangements can be made with neighboring farms for those interested.

Indulge in the flavors of the Karoo with meals that embody its rich culinary heritage. Sample succulent lamb sourced from the farm, delectable beef from the Karoo region, and seasonal venison. Taste the traditional Karoo boerewors and savor the freshness of farm-grown greens and eggs. Occasionally, a chicken dish will grace your plate. Rest assured, all the ingredients are organic, brought straight from the farm to satiate your appetite.

Due to Witdam's location on the escarpment's edge, the climate boasts a more moderate nature compared to the heart of the Karoo. Enjoy a better average rainfall, cooler summer temperatures, and crisp winter nights that may occasionally witness sporadic snowfalls, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.

If you yearn for a true escape and relish the challenge that awaits, equipped with a suitable SUV, and don't mind traversing rugged farm roads and opening several farm gates (14 or 7, depending on your chosen route), then Witdam Farm should be at the top of your destination list. Transportation can be arranged to collect you from Fraserburg, ensuring your journey is as seamless as possible. Please note that the farm accommodates small groups of up to six guests, with a minimum stay of two nights, allowing for an intimate and exclusive experience.
